The Exchange Programme holds between two research institutes in which undergraduate and graduate studies take place:

Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS for short) in Paris, France; and:

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI for short) in Madras (= Chennai), India

In general, the ENS students visit Madras during the last year of their studies at ENS, at the beginning of their PhD. The CMI students visit Paris during the third year of the Undergraduate Program. In both cases, the visit duration is of approximately 7-8 weeks.

Scientific conditions

The CMI students visiting Paris work under the direction of a professor in a specialized direction close to contemporary research, write a scientific report in latex and at the end of their stay, give a one hour talk about what they learned. [In parallel, they can attend French language courses at the "Alliance Française", in continuation to what they began in Madras at least 6 months before coming to France; some CD-ROM learning technology is also available at the "Departement of Mathematics and Applications".]

The ENS students visiting Madras give lectures inside the CMI undergraduate program. They arrive at the beginning of a semester, and teach the beginning of a core course. The course is continued by a CMI teacher after the student comes back to France. It happens also that students give lectures outside this undergraduate program, e.g. at a graduate level. Moreover, French students (that are usually preparing a PhD) give research lectures, and visit other Indian institutes or universities (in Pondicherry, Bangalore, Bombay and sometimes Delhi). During these trips, they usually deliver talks to an audience of researchers and students (many Indian students seem to be interested in preparing a PhD abroad, and this is an opportunity to create contacts).

Financial Support(s)

Traditionally, the ENS supports both the French students' Paris-Madras round trip airplane tickets, and the living expenses for the Indian guests in France. Reciprocally, the CMI supports both the Indian student's Madras-Paris round trip airplane tickets, and (in general), the living expenses in India for the French guests in India.
